About limoncello

Limoncello is an Italian liqueur made from lemon peels, sugar, water and alcohol. Usually grappa – an Italian spirit, originally made from the remains of grapes after winemaking – or vodka is used. Although it sounds like little more than lemonade with some alcohol, the production process requires a lot of care and attention. For example, the lemons are all carefully selected and harvested by hand to prevent them from hitting the ground. Limoncello is traditionally served after dinner as a digestivo, or aperitif. The growing popularity of this liqueur has meant that it has acquired a permanent place on the menus of countless Italian restaurants, also outside Italy. More and more variants of the lemon liqueur are coming onto the market. You can think of pistachiocello (with the taste of pistachios), arancello (with orange flavour) and fragoncello (with strawberry flavour). There is also a version made with milk instead of syrup: crema di limoncello. With an alcohol percentage of about 17%, this is slightly less strong than classic limoncello, which contains around 30% alcohol. But for those who don't want alcohol at all, there is now also alcohol-free limoncello.
